Why Mistakes Happen in IVF Labs, and How Matcher Prevents Them

In an IVF laboratory, multiple patients' eggs, sperm, and embryos are processed simultaneously. Traditionally, staff rely on verbal double-checks to ensure the right samples go to the right patient. But research shows that humans are prone to 'involuntary automaticity', responding automatically to questioning without matching their actions to their words, which means mistakes can still happen, even in the most careful labs.

That's why RITU IVF invested in the IMT Matcher system. It replaces manual double-checking with barcode-based electronic witnessing at every critical step, from initial registration through fertilisation, embryo culture, biopsy (PGT), cryopreservation, and transfer. Every dish, straw, tube, and PCR vial is labelled with a unique barcode that the system scans and matches before any procedure can continue. If there's a mismatch, the system instantly alerts the embryologist and blocks the procedure.

Unlike other systems, Matcher records photographic evidence of all procedures as well as providing centres with an unbroken chain of custody evidence, recording 'who, what, where and when' at every step. We use Pocket Matcher devices in both handheld and hands-free modes across our lab, along with dedicated label printers for every type of labware. The system scans barcodes without lasers, radio frequency radiation, supplementary heating, or any equipment modifications.
